Flappo SX200 – SST265 Project

Robert Eder, who is better known all over Europe as a top ‘60s Mod DJ as Flappo, has been a dedicated Lambretta enthusiast since 1986, and owns this late ‘68 Innocenti Lambretta SX200 since the early ‘90s. He used it continuously, riding it all across Europe to Mod and scooter rallies in Germany, Holland, UK, France, Spain, Italy and several Lambretta Jamborees too. He’s one of the very few people we know who always turns up at a scooter rally riding his Lambretta laden down with clothes, records, whilst wearing a parka! He has some funny stories to relate from over the years, such as when he was in Saarbrucken in southern Germany for a Scooter weekender, but got arrested by the local police, who locked him up for several hours. In the meantime, his Lambretta SX200 had won the prize at the Custom Show for Best Lambretta - but he wasn’t there to collect it! “Lambrettas can do anything, even if left alone!” he states. On another occasion, he was in Italy riding his half-stripped J50 to the painters, but he was without a helmet or paperwork. Needless to say, he got stopped by the Italian police, just before arriving at the paintshop. “If I had been in Austria, they would have taken me to the police station, whereupon they would have confiscated my scooter and given me a big fine to be paid, but fortunately in the Friuli region, they just told me that I should at least have my helmet on!” Flappo loves Italy, in fact he has a holiday house in Trieste and he never misses the chance to join any Lambretta Club meetings or Mod weekends on one of his scooters. The project he commissioned RLC to build is based on a two-tone paint scheme to combine a classic ‘60s look, along with modern technology as he has opted for a full Casa Performance SST265 engine. The scooter has been completely stripped down, sandblasted and then put it on our jig to check all the frame measurements. It was then reinforced around the engine mount tube and the struts were replaced. AAs is the norm at RLC, a complete dry-build was then carried out, with the SST engine fitted, and a hole added to the sidepanel to allow the 34mm Dell’Orto carburettor to breathe easily. Now the scooter is ready for the painters, although the final choice of colours to be used has still to be decided. We are going to meet up with Flappo very soon to have a chat about it, maybe spin some good tunes and down a few beers, which will no doubt help to make the right choices!
