How does the PickUp work?

The PickUp is comparable to a Hall sensor in a car. It generates the signal that tells the CDI (ignition box) when the ignition spark should be triggered.

Inside the PickUp is an extremely finely wound copper coil. When the magnetic pole wheel is turned, a voltage is generated by this coil. As soon as the narrow metal tongues in the magnetic core - also known as the "trigger" - reach the so-called break-off point, a voltage peak is generated. This triggers the CDI, which then triggers the ignition spark.

What happens in the event of a fault?

A defective pick-up results in either no ignition signal or an incorrect signal being output. This leads to misfiring or starting problems.

Test: You can check the pick-up with a multimeter:

• Measure the resistance between the pick-up cable and ground
• Standard value: approx. 100 Ohm (±10 Ohm)
• Higher values may indicate a creeping defect
